Design and Engineering Process

Omen Engineering uses a Product Development Process that contains five major phases. It follows a logical flow from a Project Initiation phase to Concept Build and Validation, then to a Development Build and Validation, Production Build and Validation, and finally to Production Release. The Figure below shows the flow of the project through the five phases.

1.0      Project Initiation.

In the Project Initiation phase, the goal is to develop an achievable project scope with defined deliverables, proposed timelines, and a value estimate. In the end it is determined if the product concept is viable and is worth investigating through prototype development.

2.0      Concept Prototype Build and Evaluation.

In this stage, several design concepts are developed, reviewed and competitive products are analyzed against the proposed designs.  Concept prototypes are built to prove out developed technology and performance goals. Prototypes may be built in the most efficient manner to include hand built, CNC, or rapid prototype processes. These Concept Prototypes are developed based on their ability to achieve the concept goals and not necessarily to prove out complete functionality, such as durability, endurance, etc.

3.0      Development Build & Validation.

During this phase, prototypes are built to meet all product requirements. Although failures and redesigns may be expected during this phase the outcome of this phase should be to prove a production intent design. However, the design may not necessarily be built with production tooling.

4.0      Production Build & Validation.

The focus of this phase is readying the product for production. Production prototypes are built with production tooling and used in validation testing. Documentation of the production processes and all paperwork necessary for production are completed in this stage in preparation for production to begin.

5.0      Production Release.

At this point, the new product has been validated through all production processes and the goal at this phase is to transfer the project to Manufacturing/Operations. Omen Engineering can assist our customers by performing support functions such as improving manufacturing and assembly or assisting in marketing products.
